MARTINDALE ABRASION CUM PILLING TESTER

Determination of resistance of any fabric to abrasion is usually carried out by abrading the fabric under specified conditions against a standard abradant. Although plane abrasion of fabric surface does not cover all aspects of strains that are important in determining service life, there are occasions when such a test gives useful information. With 4 nos circular abrasion tables circular specimen of fabric are abraded under known pressure under a motion which is the resultant of too simple  harmonic motion at right angle to each other the resistance of abrasion is estimated by visual appearance or by finding the loss in mass of the specimen

Description

Martindale Abrasion Cum Pilling Tester – GTX-MP6

The Martindale Abrasion Cum Pilling Tester – GTX-MP6 is designed for determining the resistance of fabric to abrasion under specified test conditions. In the test, a fabric specimen is abraded against a standard abradant under a specified pressure and controlled motion.

The GTX-MP6 is provided with four circular abrasion tables, allowing a maximum of four test specimens to be tested. Circular fabric specimens are abraded under known pressure using a motion that is the resultant of two simple harmonic motions at right angles to each other.

Abrasion resistance can be estimated by visual appearance or by determining the loss in mass of the specimen, depending on the test procedure being followed.

Working Principle of Martindale Abrasion Cum Pilling Tester

In the Martindale abrasion test, a circular fabric specimen is placed against a standard abradant under a specified pressure. The specimen and abradant are subjected to controlled movement produced by the combination of two simple harmonic motions at right angles to each other.

The GTX-MP6 uses four circular abrasion tables and can accommodate up to four test specimens. The outer pegs operate at 47.5 ± 2 rpm, with a speed ratio of 32 : 30 between the outer pegs and centre peg.

The abrasion resistance of the fabric can be evaluated through visual assessment of the specimen appearance or by determining the loss in mass of the specimen.

Test Pressure and Load

The GTX-MP6 provides test specimen pressure options of 3, 6, 9 and 12 KN/m². The maximum load is 790 g, corresponding to a pressure of 12 KN/m².

The specified pressure can be selected according to the applicable test procedure and material being evaluated.

Related Standards

The Martindale Abrasion Cum Pilling Tester – GTX-MP6 is related to the following standards as specified:

  • IS 12673:1989
  • BS Handbook 1
  • BS EN 344:1992
